The Celebration of Advent
Advent is a time for Christians to remember the birth of Christ and to recognize the power of His love throughout history and for the future.
The celebration of Advent begins on Sunday, four weeks before Christmas. Each week of Advent is marked by the lighting of another candle, to be lit each day of that week. On each Sunday following, a new candle is added and lit along with the candles from the previous weeks.
The Advent wreath, whether purchased or handmade, is the centerpiece of the Christmas season. The wreath is in the form of a circle, having no beginning and no end, and usually covered with evergreen. One large candle is placed in the center of the wreath, surrounded by four smaller candles. Traditionally, the candles of the first, second, and fourth weeks are violet, symbolizing humility and
preparation. The candle for the third week is pink as a symbol of joy. On Christmas Eve and Christmas Day the larger candle, white in color to represent Christ, is lit along with the others. You may choose to use all red or all white candles, if you like.
Advent is a time of celebration for the entire family. Children should be encouraged to participate in the daily celebration, as they are able. This guide is provided as a help for your family celebration and for preparing hearts for Christmas.
