From the November, 1999 edition of The Doulos monthly newsletter

We built a prayer altar. We dedicated our building project to the glory of God. Then we began digging the foundation.

We were cruising right along, and then... THUMP! The excavators had uncovered, beneath the parking lot, a bed of tree stumps, pushed aside to make way for the first Chapel building project. No a major setback, but something that definitely needed to be cleared away to ensure a firm foundation for our new sanctuary.

As Christians, we face similar "setbacks". We've dedicated our lives to our Savior, we're involved in ministry, then THUMP! A sin we've covered over rather than clearing away threatens our effectiveness for Christ.

A firm foundation begins, of course, with our acceptance of Christ (Romans 10:9). But it also involves confessing our sin to Christ and allowing Him to make us holy. "If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and will purify us from unrighteousness." (1 John 1:9). Jesus is "a precious cornerstone, and the one who trusts in Him will never be put to shame." (Isaiah 28:16)

If we "offer our bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God" (Romans 12:1), He will use us in great ways for the furthering of His kingdom! "God's solid foundation stands firm" (2 Timothy 2:19), and our church and our lives should be built upon Jesus, from cornerstone to capstone!

In Christ,
