From the July, 1999 edition of The Doulos monthly newsletter

by Steve Hansen

The Chapel has just completed a week long VBS which touched the lives and hearts of as many as 200 young people in our community.  I pray that the gospel of Jesus Christ penetrated those hearts and that many received the gift of salvation.  I also pray that our Christian witness will provide opportunities to deliver the message of Christ to our friends and neighbors and that the Holy Spirit will lead us to respond to those around us who are in need of the eternal peace found only through Jesus Christ. But let's not forget that salvation is only the beginning of discipleship.  In the Great Commission, Jesus said, ...go and make disciples ... (Matthew 28:19).

The growing believer hungers for more.  "... crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation, now that you have tasted that the Lord is good." (1 Peter 2:2-3)  Our church has a multitude of ministries that seek to help believers, both new and mature, to "grow up in their salvation."  The Institute for Christian Living offers ministries for men and women at every level of discipleship.  Home group ministries build the intimate relationships among fellow believers which allow for advancing discipleship and accountability. 180 Student Ministries equips youth with the tools necessary to combat the pressures of the "pop culture" of our day and helps them to grow in their faith. Sunday Spectacular and the AWANA programs build a foundation of Christian truth that will serve as building block for the advancing discipleship of our children.  Where have you plugged into the discipling ministry of The Chapel?

It's been said that everyone needs a Paul, a Barnabas and a Timothy in their life to keep the chain of discipleship alive. A Paul to look to for guidance and a role model for growth. A Barnabas to share our experiences with. A Timothy to pass the torch of discipleship. Can you name a Paul, Barnabas, and Timothy in your life right now?  If not, begin to pray that God lay upon your hearts the names of those to plug into your personal chain of discipleship.

In Christ,

Steve Hansen
